Borderlands 3

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty excited. I've put a shameful amount of hours into Borderlands 2 both on PC and console. Pre-Sequel was kind of a mess so I'm hoping to see some return to form, what with 2K Australia not leading the project this time around.

edit: also fuck epic and tencent

100%

So many Epic store exclusives I've just abandoned hope for, even past the point of me wanting to pirate the games. Fuck'em and their greed.

So, I completely understand why PC players are pissed off. The Epic Games Launcher is so shit. I wouldn't be able to prove it, but I'd go so far as to say that their platform is OBJECTIVELY worse than Steam in every way. On top of that, paranoia of the launcher doubling as spyware has been circulating. So of course every rational person and their mom wants to play BL3 on Steam, and to have to wait six months to do it is a massive bummer.

However, I don't think what Epic games is doing is unfair. Actually, its the smartest business move Epic could have made at the time. As of right now, hoarding exclusives is the ONLY WAY anyone is going to use Epic's service, and they know that. What motivation would anyone have to use their platform when Steam outpaces them at every step? I liken this move to the practices commonly conducted on consoles. Console-exclusive games always have and always will be used to push the hardware. Epic is using the timed exclusivity they have with BL3 to push their platform. It's just good business sense, it works wonders in the console market.

What it comes down to really is the morality of it. Is it fair that Epic wants to force PC users to use their shitty spyware-infested service instead of just cleaning that service up to make it an actual competitor to Steam? Fuck no. But is it also fair that we let Steam continue to have a virtual monopoly of digital video game distribution on PC? I personally wouldn't say so. And even though Epic is royally fucking up their chance day by day to succeed with this business venture, getting BL3 as an exclusive is the best thing they can do right now to compete, seeing as they haven't made any real strides in trying to fix their shitty service.

I created an Epic account before Fortnite came out, the launcher back then was very bare bones and a little confusing but there was literally only 3-4 games to play. Quake, Unreal, etc. but as soon as Fortnite gained popularity the attacks on my account started. My account got hacked literally every 3 days and I still receive notifications about it - Thankfully I never paid for anything through there.

That's just my personal anecdotal experience.

Also I like to minimize the amount of places I have to enter CC info.

Why I dont like Epic:

  1.  Their CEO compared choosing the only PC competitor to Windows as moving to Canada after a presidential election
  2. They refuse to support Linux
  3. Their largest shareholder is a firm run by Chinese oligarchs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Games#Games_as_a_Service_and_Tencent_acquisition_(2012–2018)
  4. They used advice from Chinese oligarchs to milk money from tweens: https://techcrunch.com/2018/12/27/epic-fortnite-3-billion-profit/
  5. They used that money to engage in anti-consumer and anti-competitive practices: https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/03/epic-to-continue-game-store-exclusives/
  6. They (likely illegally) collect data without sufficient notice: https://www.thenerdmag.com/epic-games-store-fails-to-comply-with-gdpr/
  7. They inspect steam data without permission (don't worry, Epic said it was totally innocent! They just naively copied a file they totally had no intention of using): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/epic-promises-to-fix-game-launcher-after-privacy-concerns/
  8. Their store is terrible:

That all said, I think their revenue split is cool and I think steam should increase their revenue split to a similar level.
