Thursday D&D - Roll20 - Curse of Strahd

Recommended Posts

Thursday Night D&D - Roll20 - Curse of Strahd - Every Thursday 5PM PST

Greetings fellow dungeon crawlers.

I wanted to get a few things out of the way in order to have a better idea and mutual direction of the upcoming campaign. By no means are these hard or fast rules and I welcome input if you disagree;

  • XP - I would prefer to tally up your exp behind the scenes and will tell you when you've leveled up at the end of whichever game session you hit the required number. I feel as though this will keep the flow of the story going better and won't cause disruption in the middle of our roleplay.
  • Player Behaviour: As we're going to be online and no one can really see each other, I don't care if you drink or smoke or whatever. If it affects the gameplay in a disruptive manner (because getting sloshed makes for fun times and it's not always a bad thing) I'll bring it to your attention.
  • I'm pretty relaxed, but try to have a movement or action ready to go in your head, so when I call out your name, you don't have to look at your sheet going, "Uhhhhh." for 2 minutes. It just keeps the game going.
  • Unannounced dice rolls are a no. (eg. *roll a dice, get a nat 20, "Hey, I rolled a nat 20 for perception. No, you say, "I want to check around, I want to roll for perception, etc, and then roll)
  • Please curb your metagaming. If I tell someone something about their environment, it's up to them to share what they see. You weren't privy to the info.

  • Player Character Behaviour: There will be a couple of minors along for our campaign, so I'm going to suggest we stick with PG-13 content.
  • Player absences: Please try to be in the game on time. We all have our lives, some of us are parents or have other responsibilities, so if you can't make it, please let me know. If you want me to love you long time, please come up with a reason for why your character wasn't there, otherwise they might just come along for the ride with their thumb up their bum. 😛
  • Critical hits = max damage + another damage roll. This goes for players and enemies.
  • Stealth. If you want to be sneaky, my desire is to roll the d20 for you and then have you carry out whatever action you wish. I will know if you are stealthed and you will not, until something happens or you manage your stealthed action. Adds flavour, and I think it's not unreasonable, as you don't know if you're hidden, but whatever's watching for you sure does.

These questions would be regarding player relations, so it would be good for you all to sit in discord together and hash out how you want the following:

  • Should players be more independent or more party focused?
  • Want to be murderhobos? (kick the door down, kill the monster, take the loot)
  • Or would you prefer some story?
  • Would you like me to adhere to the racial prejudices present in the DnD universe? For instance, Tieflings are half demons, feared and rebuked by many. Shop owners might treat you badly, etc. "Skyrim is for the nords, you knife-eared bitch."
  • How much sexual content do you want? Some of the storyline has sexualized content. My intent is to leave it as written, but to ask the player characters to not make any advances towards each other either inside or outside of the game.
  • How important do you want alignment to be? In CoS, you are trapped in a corrupting environment and I think alignment would matter for your characters greatly.
  • Character Creation: I don't really think it matters what you put together, as long as you have a convincing backstory I can try to weave into the background tapestry of CoS.
  • Permadeath? I suggest you make around 3 characters, as my preference is to include permadeath. Curse of Strahd is meant to be tough and unforgiving.
  • My style of DMing might be a little rough for you, as I am still learning 100% of the rules myself. I tend towards Rules as Written DMing, but I tend to be more focused on what's good for the adventure.

1. Create an account here: https://roll20.net/

2. Download and create an account for Discord. https://discordapp.com/

3. Grab a couple character sheets and make some characters. If you need help with this step, I can help.  WotC Official Adventurer's League Sheet

4. Alternatively, here's a link to a dropbox with a ton of custom made sheets tailored towards specific classes: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dls227qhq2mk48v/AACW8sPWR0eJPvO6VXyIy-Kaa?dl=0

5. Meet up on Thursday for our Session 0 where you, the party, can decide which of the characters you made you want to play with the most. Please send me a copy of your sheet, so I don't need to ask you every time what your AC is. 😉

6. Prepare a backstory and send it to me. It doesn't need to be crazy, just a paragraph or two of where you come from, who you are, what shaped you into being an adventurer, etc.

7. We play. As far as I can tell, we can have our first Session 0 as soon as this Thursday. Or if you're all communicative and get ready for this Thursday, that works too!

Please, if you need clarification, disagree and want to challenge a ruling, or just want to hang, let me know.

Looks like it's THIS Thursday.

But seriously, wow, Zeriador, this is an amazing post. I'm fine with everything. I like a party driven story type quest, lots of killing and adventuring but not necessarily murder hobo style. Racial stuff doesn't offend me. Nor does sexual content, whatever is in there is fine with me. As for character's, I'll make a few but the one I want to play most has an unusual background. I was wondering how magical this world is? I was hoping that my character could be Thor, God of Thunder's actual pet hunting bear, accidentally sent to this realm through a portal found tagging along on one of the thick headed gods quests. Made into a human by some unusual magic but occasionally my true form is unleashed in moments of great need.

I was thinking of rolling up a rouge, or some arcane class depending on what other would like to do. and as for perma death i'd rather the practice of it being possible within a day but pretty hard/impossible after that. you know, find a temple or a priest. I don't think those exist in Barovia, but just as an option would be nice.

Zeri, do you want us to write out our own character sheet on paper or is there a way to do it in roll20? And how do you like to have us roll stats? I usually use the 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8 scores, but if you want us rolling for them that's cool too.

So, edit button is gone for above post, sorry.

I sent interested parties the link to a game. When you click it, it will take you to a page inside of which you can press the big pink "Launch Game" button. Then you can navigate using the buttons in the top right to look for your character slots. We can import your finished characters into my compendium and then use them for any game I run ever again! 😄

I won't be able to let you edit your sheets until you log in at least once, so try to do that.

Any restrictions on characters learning sign language? Useful for a number of reasons..

Are we meeting up tonight for a session 0? I'd love to properly make my character and get to chat with you all. What's the plan?

@Lupich There shouldn't be I think. Thieve's cant is something like that and dark elves/Drow have something similar since they operate in a lot of dark/lightless enviroments. idk how zeri would want to go about it.

Sign language? That's pretty neat, but uncommon and would have to be learned over a period of time ingame, alongside a hefty sum of gold, to pay a tutor, or something.

So because it's not a players handbook language it becomes an in game learnable skill instead of a choose at the start language, I can dig that. Lupich told me I should choose sign language as my second but I couldn't think of a good enough reason for why a bear would ever want to or be able to learn it. But if it can be done in his human form then that changes things.. I'll probably need more than the crappy 20 gold I rolled.

My notes from tonight's session.

Quote

Lady Moren

Run off Gypsies

Gypsies invited you for drinks, they began a story of their alleigience of their dark prince etc.
They asked for your help and at that point you fell asleep. Woke up abandoned, party cautiously packed up.

Walked through woods, found a note directed to "eritovich" found muddy road, followed until trees grew sparse. Saw a pair of children. Davkas ran to give aid cuz Paladin, they asked for help getting their parents from a house with a monster.

Found a den of wolves, they attacked. Found an animated suit of armor which was defeated.

Davkas told me and Curly and Larry to hold tight in the kitchen and wait for his secret knock.

Cooking Root Veg and Sausage stew for everyone.

Found Amulet in lockbox work 700+ gp

Davkas came and grabbed Mo with secret knock, left stew with Curly and Larry and rejoined the gang.

Davkas opened door and found ghost lady obessed with dusting stuff. she asked if we saw the kids.

Me (Mo) found a secret entrance and asked Thorbjorn to help smash it open. Gouged a hole in secret door. Found a staircase with cobwebs.

Checked last room and found a childrens play area, abandoned.

Broke door open with a rope and board lever, revealed staircase going up. Found a big dusty room with not much in it.

Went into a room, found the ghost maids physical dead body, murdered to death in a crusty room.

Found a gloved hand print in dust but no foot prints, windows dont open/close. We leave the room..

Next room I lockpick and open, inside are two dead children holding each other, appearing to have starved to death. a model playhouse that is a replica of the house we are in showing a secret staircase.

We attempt to leave but Thornbjorn was possesd by spirit of dead kid. They dont want him to leave, they are afraid to leave because of the monster.

Eventually convinced him to let him leave. Fed thor and Fenrir (his pupper) some sausage stew.

Went into next room and found chest with a glove, and bloodied dagger. I took bloodied dagger, cleaned it off, hid in sheet in inventory.

went to secret staircase that appears to lead down to basement.

Went down to basement. Appears to be a large underground crypt of living quarters. Some recently used, some abandoned, moldy, and not used recently.

Found underground kitchen in "Durst" crypt, pantry had ghoul, we kicked its ass.

Eldar opened a sacrophagus and got F'd up by some insect gross things.

Also saving some pic for roll20.

murdered to death

I lost it here.

Those might be the best notes I've ever seen, please continue to take dope notes. I do not note take and probably should but, I don't think Thorbjörn is that good at writing.

And Zeriador, Lupich tells me you've never even played D&D before so I thought I should tell you that you are doing a fantastic job DM'ing I never would have known. Please keep it up and thank you for playing the game to the parties favour and not being a vicious dictator DM who like to see us squirm, I appreciate you going easy on us for the early levels.

Also, I must say that I am soo happy I managed to befriend Fenris (Fenrir, same thing). I also want to add that I forgot to add lvl 1 spells when we levelled up and I had just added cantrips so I decided to take "Speak with Animals" (along with Thunderwave, how could I not?) now that I have a fellow animal to speak with! So once we are out of this crypt and relatively safe I am definitely asking him wtf he was doing in a dumb waiter, haha!

I'm really enjoying playing with you all, thanks again!
